With climate change set to be one of the stories that will dominate the global news agenda in 2019, StoryLab has been working with Sustainable Nation Ireland to drive the awareness of green and sustainable finance in Ireland.
2018 was a breakthrough year with the first-ever Year of Sustainable Business, supported and executed by Sustainable Nation Ireland with a €1m programme of activities and over 60 events held throughout the country.
Consistent media coverage of the events throughout 2018 was key to the success of the programme.
Press and other media significantly raised awareness of the agenda and strengthened our client’s aims to position Ireland as a leading global hub for green and sustainable finance, innovation, skills and leadership.
StoryLab worked all year with Sustainable Nation Ireland to seed news and features in the national and regional media about their important work and to craft leadership content that explained its mission.
The climax was the inaugural Climate Week Ireland 2018 in November and the EIT Climate-KIC Climate innovation Summit at Dublin Castle.
The Summit saw Richard Bruton make his first public announcement as Climate Action Minister, where he pledged to make Ireland a leader, not a follower, in tackling climate change.
Climate Week itself and the Summit garnered scores of headlines from major national news outlets including The Irish Times, Irish Independent, Newstalk and others, as well as reports carried in UK publications such as Environmental Finance and Responsible Investor.com.
The Year of Sustainable Business 2018 kicked off in January with a feature in the Sunday Independent and YOSB18 featured regularly in the media throughout the year, receiving up to 100 separate pieces of coverage in national and international publications reaching over one million people.
Earlier this year, the Irish Independent produced a three-part explainer on green finance which interviewed the main green finance players in Ireland while The Irish Times also reported on Sustainable Nation Ireland’s work.
We also made sure that Sustainable Nation Ireland was agile in responding to events and media requests for commentary and analysis; CEO Stephen Nolan authored an ‘op-ed’ in the Irish Independent on Ireland’s first green bond issue and its long-term implications.
The frequent media coverage of YOSB18 offered numerous opportunities to drive the green finance agenda and sustainability agenda at home and abroad, a momentum that will carry into 2019.
