Connolly Motor Group gets engines running with the human angle

At StoryLab, we are always impressing on our clients that stories are the key to gaining media interest. And one of them – Connolly Motor Group — has such a great story that it was impossible to resist.

Run by brothers Neil and Kevin Connolly, it is one of the county’s largest motor groups with more than 200 staff at its Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen dealerships across Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

But it is the history of the 78-year-old garage turned luxury motor group that makes a fascinating tale — one that Neil recently shared with the Sunday Independent.

The brothers’ grandfather, Thomas Connolly, built the foundations in 1939 when he opened a Fiat dealership and forecourt in Ballina, Co Mayo.

Their father, Kevin Sr, joined the garage as a 15-year-old apprentice mechanic and worked there until the 1960s when he left for the U.S. to set up a garage there.

The story of family, emigration and determination continued with Kevin Sr, his wife and three young sons, Kevin Jr, Neil, and Greg returning to Ballina in 1979 and setting up a dealership three doors down from his father’s original garage.

Neil described it as “a mom-and-pop set-up, with my Dad doing sales and service and parts and my mother handling the phone calls”.

The article shows the human side to Connolly Motor Group but also allowed the brothers to get the story out about the opening of their new Mercedes-Benz passenger car dealership and a state-of-the-art Audi Terminal dealership – both in Galway.

In the month of October alone, Connollys made headlines 16 times in both national and local media outlets including the Irish Independent, the Sunday Independent, the Irish Examiner, the Irish Sun, the Connacht Tribune and Galway Bay FM.
