Ireland's biggest-selling daily newspaper, the 'Irish Independent', this week published its flagship series of 'The Written Word' supplements on English, for Leaving Certificate students. The series was edited by StoryLab.
The content, spread across three unmissable special 24-page magazines, focused on tips and insights for the 2017 exams from teachers nationwide, with contributions from well-known personalities and best-selling authors.
The content brief was to make the subject of English accessible, contemporary and relevant to today’s teenagers. Guest writers and interviewees included author Sarah Webb and Kerry GAA legend Tomás Ó’Sé.
Part One had a special focus on communications with pieces on story structure, content development and the mechanics of good writing. There was also a look at the phenomenon of ‘fake news’, a hot topic at present. Part Two included detailed analysis of works on the 2017 syllabus such as ‘Hamlet’ and the movie ‘Rear Window’ while Part Three concentrated on the poetry section of the exam.
