Sligo Rovers: a story with soul

What is it about a local football club that stirs the soul? Why do communities continue to treasure hometown teams like Sligo Rovers?

It’s been an extremely turbulent period for the reputation and organisation of Irish soccer with controversy over the FAI’s finances but support for local football clubs across Ireland remains as vibrant as ever.

In 2019, Sligo Rovers asked StoryLab to create a video that showcased the pride that people and supporters have in their club’s past, present and future. And they wanted it to stand out.

Shot over four months, the video beautifully captures the excitement, atmosphere and drama of match day at The Showgrounds.

Made for the start of the new 2020 SSE Airtricity League, it also focuses on the true community spirit of Sligo Rovers, something that every Irish football club can relate to.

The film features cameos by fans of all ages as well as former boss Chris Rutherford, former Tánaiste and finance minister Ray MacSharry and a voiceover by club historian Aidan Mannion.

Sligo Rovers’ former CEO Colin Feehily said: “This touching video perfectly captures and showcases the great colour and atmosphere of The Showgrounds on match night. It also shows how important Sligo Rovers is to people in our town and in the surrounding areas.

“From young to old, we have supporters of all ages, male and female, a real strong variety which shows the club means something to everyone. The film shows just how much we all love The Rovers.”

The video has been viewed more than 50,000 times on Sligo Rovers’ own social media channels and shared widely.

The story of the video even appeared in the Irish Sun under the headline “Brilliant video produced by Sligo Rovers demonstrates the impact League of Ireland clubs have on their communities”.

Editor’s Note: Sadly, since the publication of this blog in February 2020, Sligo Rovers historian Aidan Mannion has passed away. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
